Should Your Horror Visual Novel Join Steam Scream V This October?

A visual novel developer with a ghost story on Steam probably noticed Valve's October calendar: Next Fest ends on October 26, and Steam Scream V starts the same morning. The tempting plan is to tick a horror tag, enter a discount, and hope the fest page brings new players. That plan can fail in two quiet ways. The game may not count as horror under this year's rules, or the discount may be blocked by a cooldown you forgot about.

Valve's documentation for Steam Scream V answers most of this directly. The event runs from October 26 at 10 a.m. Pacific to November 2 at 10 a.m. Pacific. It has been narrowed to horror titles, with one exception for games that are specifically about Halloween. The start of the event is also the deadline for entering a discount or opting out.

This guide walks through three decisions in order: whether your visual novel genuinely fits, whether you can discount it, and which form of participation makes sense if you cannot.

Is your visual novel horror, or only dark?

Valve describes this fifth Scream as "specifically for Horror titles" (Steamworks, Steam Scream V Fest). The listed examples include classic horror, psychological horror, body horror, jump scares, and the supernatural or uncanny. The page then rules out several near misses. A game about monsters, zombies, vampires, or ghosts is not automatically eligible if it is not horror-themed. Lots of blood or gore does not qualify a game by itself. Games built around a power fantasy are generally excluded, even with a gloomy atmosphere.

That boundary matters for visual novels because the genre often borrows horror textures without being horror. A murder mystery with a creepy mansion, a romance with a ghost love interest, or a melancholy story about grief can all look dark in screenshots. Valve's test is about the player's experience instead. Its own questions are blunt: would a sensitive person have nightmares, would screaming be a reasonable reaction, and is a dark room with headphones the best way to play?

Comparison of visual novels that likely fit the horror fest and those that usually do not

The general themed-sale rules add a second filter. Valve decides eligibility from the store tags and from the gameplay that the store page shows. A game must be primarily about the theme, so one frightening route in an otherwise cozy story is not enough. The Halloween exception is also narrow: the base game must be about Halloween. A seasonal update, a costume DLC, or an in-game Halloween event does not count.

Our reading of these rules, which is an interpretation rather than Valve's wording, is that you should judge your own game with outside evidence. Look at what playtesters actually reported. If they described tension, dread, or a scene they did not want to replay at night, horror is likely the honest label. If they talked mostly about the mystery, the characters, or the romance, the fest is probably the wrong stage, and changing tags to get in would mislead both Valve and players.

Can you actually offer a discount on October 26?

Joining does not require a discount. Valve says, however, that each themed event page features discounted games most prominently. So the next question is whether a discount is even allowed for your title.

Valve's discounting rules state that themed sale events follow the normal 30-day cooldowns with no exceptions. Three separate timers can block you:

  • A product cannot be discounted for 30 days after its release, including Early Access and full release.
  • A product cannot be discounted for 30 days after a price increase in any currency.
  • A product cannot be discounted within 30 days of another discount.

The seasonal sales are the important exception. Valve's discount page says the four big seasonal sales neither create a discount cooldown nor are blocked by one. The 2026 Autumn Sale ran from October 1 to October 8, so a visual novel that took part in it can still enter a Scream V discount on October 26. A custom sale or another themed fest discount that ended after late September is a different story and will usually block you.

Checklist of the three cooldowns that decide whether a fest discount is possible

Check the exact end time of your last discount in Steamworks rather than counting from memory. Cooldowns run from the moment the previous discount ended, and Steam discounts usually end at 10 a.m. Pacific. If one timer is still running on October 26, plan to join without a discount instead of trying to squeeze one in.

What if the game is unreleased or only has a demo?

Valve's themed-sale page lists separate sections for discounted games, free-to-play games, games with demos, and upcoming titles in Coming Soon mode. An unreleased horror visual novel can therefore join from its Coming Soon page, and a released or upcoming title can be represented by its demo. Playtests are not included in themed sales.

For demos, registration depends on the base game's store page information. That makes accurate tags on the main page more important than anything you write on the demo page. If you took part in Next Fest with a demo, the timing is convenient: Next Fest runs from October 19 to 26, and Scream V begins as it closes. A horror demo can move from one event to the next, provided the base game is eligible and registered.

Keep expectations measured. Valve chooses a handful of games for the official event trailer, and that requires a separate marketing opt-in invitation, registration with a discount, and a public trailer on the store page. Unreleased games, demos, and free games are generally not eligible for the trailer. Placement inside the sale page is not guaranteed either.

When should you register, announce, and decide?

Most of the work happens before the event starts.

  1. Check your eligibility list now. Valve auto-invites eligible titles and emails users who allowed Steamworks communications. If you expected an invitation and did not receive one, check the event's eligibility list and use the appeal option at the bottom of the registration page.
  2. Register, then decide on a discount by the morning of October 26. The start time of the fest, 10 a.m. Pacific, is also the deadline for entering a discount or opting out.
  3. Announce from October 22. Valve's event trailer launches that day, and the documentation says you may share your participation from that point.

If you decide not to join, that is a valid result. Skipping a fest that does not match your story protects your store page from players who arrive expecting fear and leave disappointed reviews.

Where does Novelez fit in this plan?

Novelez does not publish to Steam and does not manage Steam tags, discounts, or event registration. Those tasks stay in Steamworks. What Novelez can help with is the evidence before the decision.

A Novelez share link opens in a browser without signing in, so you can send a short horror section to a few trusted readers before October 22 and ask them one question: did this feel frightening or only dark? Novelez requires at least 20 dialogue lines and one choice before a project can be shared, and shared projects are not indexed by search engines. When the project is ready to become a Steam build, the Ren'Py project export gives you the script and assets as a zip that you open in the Ren'Py SDK and package yourself.

If you are building a horror visual novel right now, which scene do you expect players to remember as the most frightening, and have you tested it on someone who did not write it?
