Asset System Overview

In Novelez, assets are all the image, audio, and video files that make up your game. Lines in the Script column reference assets to build the actual visuals and sounds of the game, so preparing assets is one of the most fundamental steps in game creation.

Asset Categories

Novelez provides five main categories:

  • Character — Character images shown during dialogue
  • Background — Background images used in scenes
  • BGM — Background music that sets the overall mood
  • SFX — Short sound effects such as button clicks or door opens
  • Mov — Video files for cutscenes, intros, or endings

These categories apply not only to the built-in asset library but also to assets you upload yourself. My Assets and Project Assets each start with five top-level folders — Character, Background, Bgm, Sfx, and Mov — and files are uploaded inside these category folders (or sub-folders you create within them). Each folder accepts specific file types and sizes.

Where to Access Assets

You can work with assets in two places:

  • Assets page in the dashboard — View the complete asset list, and upload, organize, or delete files.
  • Inside the editor — Select a line in the Script column and the details under the line open. The buttons there that set a character image, background, or music open the asset picker so you can choose the file directly. Which button you see depends on what you are setting:
    • [Choose image] in a dialogue line's details — the expression image
    • [Select Background] in a background line's details — the background image
    • [Select Background] and [Select BGM] in the Game settings panel — the title-screen background and title music

You cannot type an address into a file field; files are picked only through the asset picker.

The details strip that opens under a selected background line, with its [Select Background] button
