Player Info Block

Player Info Block

The Player info block asks the player for basic information at the start of the game. The values entered here can be inserted into later dialogue (and other text) using substitution variables, letting your story adapt to each player's name or gender. You can add only one of these blocks per game.

How to Add It

On the insert bar, open [More ▾] and choose Player info. Only one is allowed per game, so it is greyed out once you have one. Click the line to open the details under the line.

Key Properties

  • Ask Name (askName) — Toggle. When on, the player is asked to enter their name at the start of the game.
  • Ask Gender (askGender) — Toggle. When on, the player is asked to choose their gender at the start of the game.

If you turn both off, the player info screen is skipped automatically during play.

Using the Collected Values

Values collected by the Player info block can be referenced in later Dialogue text using these tokens:

  • {player_name} — The name the player entered
  • {player_gender} — The gender the player selected

Example:

Dialogue: "How was your day, {player_name}?"

{player_name} is replaced whenever the player_name variable has a value. Normally that value comes from a Player info block with Ask Name turned on, but a Variable block can also set player_name. If there is no value, it is shown as literal text, and a warning appears in the details under the dialogue line.

Usage Tips

  • Place it at the very start — Name and gender prompts usually go at the very beginning of the game, at the top of the list.
  • Ask only what you need — If only a name matters, leave the gender toggle off. Unnecessary prompts raise the barrier to entry.
  • Watch for typos in tokens — The substitution only works with the exact token name. A typo will leave the braces showing in dialogue.
