Sound Block
Sound Block
The Sound block plays a short sound effect. It is used for one-shot sounds such as door opens, breaking glass, or notification chimes. It plays independently from the background music, so it does not interrupt it.
Key Properties
- Sound Effect File (assetUrl) — Click the folder button next to the field and pick an audio file from the asset picker. You cannot type an address directly. Once a file is picked, its length is shown.
- Loop (ambience) — Turn this on for continuous sounds like rain or wind. It keeps playing as the player advances and stops automatically at new background music, a Stop music block, or the ending. With it off, the sound plays once and stops when the player advances to the next line.
How It Differs from Dialogue's Sound Effect
The Dialogue block used to have its own sound effect field, so a sound could play right as a line began. That field now appears only on Dialogue blocks that already have a sound effect set (that sound still plays), and new sound effects are added with a Sound block.
- To play a sound with a line, place a Sound block right before that Dialogue block.
- To insert a sound effect during staging, independent of any dialogue, also use a Sound block.
Usage Tips
- Short files — Sound effects are usually 1–2 seconds long. If you pick a long file (over 10 seconds) with Loop off, a warning tells you it will be cut off at the next line. For continuous sounds, turn on Loop; for music, a Music block is the better fit.
- Prefer OGG — At comparable quality, OGG is smaller, so repeated playback stays lightweight.
- Use sparingly — Too many sound effects can distract the player. Save them for the moments that matter.
